Taï Forest National Park, Ivory Coast

Only a handful of chimpanzee communities have mastered tool use, and this troop is one of them. The elders know where to find the most nutritious food and how to extract it; for example using a stone to crack a nut. A five-year-old female chimp observes her mother do so and attempts to try for herself but struggled to identify the right type of tool. One thing she does know however, is how to strip a branch down to size and use it as a spoon to access parts of the inside of the nut that her fingers can't reach.

Lake Malawi, Malawi

Like other mouth-brooding cichlids, a female big-mouth hap will allow her fry to enter her mouth, as a sort of mobile nursery, in order to keep them safe. When the coast is clear, she releases them.

For the longest time, I was led astray by a BBC article putting this entire sequence at Lake Tanganyika [1]. Then, I was informed by member on a Fish ID Facebook group that this is very likely a cichlid of the genus Tyrannochromis endemic to Lake Malawi. Note that the rocks shown with the mouthbrooding cichlid match those of Lake Malawi [2]. Indeed there is more evidence online that scenes of cichlids were filmed in Lake Malawi [3]. According to Cichlid forum species profile, T. macrostoma "differs slightly from T. nigriventer in that the bulge on its snout is closer to the eye than the snout, whereas in T. nigriventer, this bulge is at the midpoint." at a push I'd say the only discernable bulge on the female shown is closer to her eye, so I believe this is T. macrostoma.

Lake Tanganyika,

Filmed in a research lab in Brno, Czech Republic according to the BBC [1]. This cichlid species is well documented to be subject to brood parasitism by cuckoo catfish [2] [3].

According a production still caption, this was shot in Luangwa, Zambia: "The red-billed oxpecker finds food from an unusual source - a hippopotamus. The aggressive nature of hippos means cuts are common - giving an opportunistic oxpecker the chance to pick t its wounds for food. Luangwa, Zambia." [1]. Footage was filmed of lowland gorillas and forest elephants but the shoot was cut short due to the threat of poachers in the area, as detailed in the behind-the-scenes segment. Location is the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, according to field crew member Julie Monière: "In 2017, I spent 4 weeks in Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park filming Gorillas." [1]
