The species is unclear to me. The corvids found in this region include the large-billed crow (Corvus macrorhynchos), the common raven (Corvus corax), and possibly the carrion crow (Corvus corone). The common raven is larger and has neck ruffles (hackles). Some shots appear to show this. But ravens also have a wedge-shaped tail vs. the carrion crow's fan-shaped tail, which is seen in some shots.

The media pack suggests that this sequence was filmed in both the US and Canada, while the behind the scenes article on the programme website [1] suggests it was filmed "in a cabin in the forest near the border of America and Canada - near where the turtles would naturally live".
An article on the State University of New York's Cortland campus website [2] clarifies that the majority of filming took place at the William H. Parks Family Center for Environmental and Outdoor Education at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, with the support of Rhonda Pitoniak who is credited at the end of the episode.
The only indication that any of this sequence was filmed in Canada that I could find is in the junior novelisation by Leisa Stewart-Sharpe that accompanies the series [3]: "In the frozen soil of Canada's Algonquin forest are tiny frozen turtles."
The subspecies is unclear. Both the Midland painted turtle (Chrysemys picta marginata) and the Eastern painted turtle (C. p. picta) are found in New York state. [Link 1][Link 2][Link 3]
