Awash, Ethiopia

The only tilapiine cichlid known to be in the waters of the Awash River and Ethiopian rift lakes... is a subspecies of Oreochromis niloticus, O. n. cancellatus. Although three other tilapiines, Oreochromis spilurus, Tilapia zillii and Sarotherodon galilaeus, are found in the systems near the Awash, they are not found in the same waters as O. n. cancellatus... Oreochromis spilurus is found on the eastern side of the Ethiopian-Somali watershed. A unique subspecies, O. n. filoa, is found only in hot springs near Addis Ababa. Stewart, Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, Vol. 19, No. 2 (Jun. 14, 1999), pp. 293-301)
