Though the main underwater baitball sequence was filmed in Port St Johns, topside shots of common dolphins and cape gannets were filmed, from boat and by drone, in Algoa Bay: "In addition to the underwater drama of a baitball, we also wanted to get the build-up and action above water... and for this Port St Johns was definitely not the place. The good underwater visibility at this spot means it's very popular with tourists and divers... For this above-water perspective, the Oceans team decided on Port Elizabeth, over 600 kilometres further down the coast" (A Perfect Planet book)

Perfect Planet book suggests underwater baitball shots were of sardines; but other sources (including the narration itself) make it clear these are mackerel. Visual ID that these are either chub mackerel or horse mackerel, both baitfish found in South Africa. They are both distinguished from sardines (such as the South African pilchard, the main species in sardine runs) by their larger bodies and brighter yellow tails. The cape horse mackerel has "no distinctive markings apart from a small, black spot on edge of its operculum near the upper angle", which isn't really visible in the shots; so, I'm leaning towards this being the Pacific chub mackerel, which is "absent from the Indian Ocean except for South Africa from KwaZulu-Natal to Western Cape, and are replaced by the closely related Atlantic chub mackerel in the Atlantic." Likely a copper shark based on colouration, though at least one individual has a black mark on the bottom tip of its tail (03:46), which is inconsistent with this speciess

"The blue mussel that grow along our coastline are of the species Mytilus edulis, also known as the common mussel. But we also have Mytilus galloprovincialis and Mytilus trotsulus, which is siblings to Mytilus edulis. These species have distinct distributions but may hybridize if they are present at the same locality. How the distributions are in Saltstraumen, is impossible to say as it has not been done any research on this. Most likely, Mytilus edulis is the dominant species of mussels in the Saltstraumen marine protected area, as this is a mussel that naturally belongs in the North Atlantic. Mytilus galloprovincialis is from the Mediterranean Sea, and Mytilus trotsulus originates in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean." The reef manta ray has a dark dorsal side with usually two lighter areas on top of the head, looking like a nuanced gradient of its dark dominating back coloration and whitish to greyish, the longitudinal separation between these two lighter areas forms a kind of “Y”. While for the oceanic manta ray, the dorsal surface is deep dark and the two white areas are well marked without gradient effect. The line of separation between these two white areas form meanwhile a "T".
