The seal has to keep its breathing hole open by grinding back the ice with its teeth. A female gives birth on ice. Its pup undergoes one of the sharpest drops in temperature any animal ever faces, leaving the warmth of the womb to land on the ice. The female shields her pup from the blizzard, which can rage for days. Sometimes females have to make a decision whether to stay with her pup or shelter in the water which is comparatively warmer at -2 degrees Celsius.
